Confession: we knew Shoes of Prey would be a special destination for shoe-loving ladies. But we had no idea that it would be a hit with the under-10 set, too. That was until we discovered Byron, 8, and Aralai, 5, who used the site to design perfect shoes for their Nanna and Auntie Ni.
"The kids wanted to give them both something special," explained the pair's mum, Sam. "Both their auntie and nanna are very creative women who inspire them, so this was about the kids giving them back something creative in return."
Working with his favourite colour (green), Byron went for an elegant 3-inch stiletto heel in turquoise and gold snakeskin with a dark blue snakeskin heel and bow.
Based on her favourite colour (purple), Aralai played with texture and decorations to settle on a violet fishskin ballet flat with toe and heel caps in shiny purple leather with a crystal rose decoration in pink silk.
"It's such a great website for kids," added Sam. "At their age they're so familiar with finding their way around computers and websites. I just sat them down with the iPad, showed them how to select shapes, heel sizes and different colours and left them to choose the options and detailing themselves."
Sam says the family was blown away with the results ("My sister's been dying to do a fashion photo shoot with the kids and the shoes") and adds that the project has given her a few ideas too: "I know what present I'm wishing for this Mother's Day!"
